Wikilengua for Spanish!

Share/Save/Bookmark
A wiki focused on the Spanish language has been up and running for some months now. It’s called Wikilengua.org and it’s an ideal place to clear up questions or doubts you have about practical usage of Spanish. Wikilengua is essentially a resource for Spanish speakers and Spanish language students to share information about any grammatical doubts they have. It’s open to people all over the world and it’s designed to be an Internet "meeting place" for linguists, journalists and editors. Spoken in more than 20 countries, Spanish poses a daunting and fluid challenge to academics trying to track variations in grammar and vocabulary; there can be many ways to say a simple word, such as bus: colectivo in Argentina, camión in México, or guagua in Cuba. Every language has specific norms that must be followed in writing. This wiki aspires to become a style guide for journalists, teachers, linguists, or others who need this type of guidance to improve their writing (and speaking) in Spanish.
Style guides are not hard to find when someone is trying to learn a language, but what is great about this online tool is that users can submit current idioms, slang, and expressions from all over the Spanish-speaking world. For example, expressions like “Poner los puntos sobre las íes” (literally, to place dots on letters i), which means set straight, can be found. In this way, it’s possible to have access to more than the standard Spanish presented by the RAE.
I'm not sure if this Web site is very useful for beginning students of Spanish because, at times, it is quite technical. It can be very practical and beneficial, however, for Spanish teachers, translators, and editors like me. Check it out!
